NO HALF MEASURES
OLIVER CROMWELL’S GOOD SENSE. Oliver Cromwell’s good sense, combined with forcefulness, has given his speeches a new vogue in these searching times. In the following speech to Parliament in September, 1656, his conclusion is especially apt:—“You see where your .war is. It is with the Spaniard. You have peace with all ‘other’ nations, or most of them; Swede. Dane, Dutch. At present, I say, it is well; it is at present so. And so with the Portugal, France—the Mediterranean Sea. Both those States, beth Christian and Profane; the Mahometans —you have peace With them all. Only with Spain, I say, you have a difference, you have a war. I pray consider it. Do I come to tell you that I would tie you to this war? No. As you shall find your spirits and reasons grounded in what hath been said, so let you and me join in the prosecution of that war —as we are satisfied, and as the cause Will appear to our consciences in the sight of the Lord. But if you can come to prosecute it, prosecute it vigorously, or do not do it at all!” I
