RAPID PROGRESS

MADE BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TWO BILLS PUT THROUGH ALL STAGES. SUPPLEMENTARY ESTIMATES PASSED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. With the end of the session expected this week, the House of Representatives got busily to work yesterday on the legislation remaining for disposal. After an informative series of Ministerial replies to urgent questions the House tackled the War Damage Bill, which insures property-owners against loss by enemy action. Describing it as a good Bill, the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Holland, facilitated its progress. It was read a second time in the afternoon, and in the evening was read a third time and passed. Next to be dealt with was the Land and Income Tax Amendment Bill, the chief provision of which alters the basis of taxation of the trading banks and removes a very old' method which Mr Nash declared to be unfair. For taxation purposes the banks henceforth are to be placed on the same footing as ordinary commercial companies. It was passed in the evening, the concluding stages occupying little time. The Agriculture Emergency Regulations Confirmation Bill, which was read a first time, is an annual measure confirming and validating regulations made under the Agriculture (Emergency Powers) Act, 1934. The supplementary estimates of departmental expenditure were put through in under two hours of the night sitting. The House adjourned at 10.30 till 2.30 this afternoon.
