ALFREDTON
WOMEN’S INSTITUTE BUSINESS AT MONTHLY MEETING. ("Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Women’s Institute was held on Friday afternoon. There was a good attendance of members. Mrs Hull presided. A new member was welcomed to the Institute. The president read a letter received from the Lady Galway Patriotic Guild acknowledging receipt of boxes of warm garments sent from the Institute. Mrs Rolls and Mrs S. Edmonds were appointed delegates to attend the conference meeting on October 28. Members decided to send 10s to the leper fund. During the afternoon Mrs M. StoneWigg gave an interesting lecture to the home nursing class on “Infection.” Donations were received from Mrs D. Parsonson and Mrs H. Higginson. The prize winners were as follow: Knitting, Balaclavas, Mrs Dickens 1. Mrs Low 2. Mittens, Mrs Hutchings 1, Mrs Dickens 2 and 3. Pullovers, Mrs Ycuell 1. Warm garments for refugees, Mrs Dickens 1 and 2, Mrs Youell 3, Second class. Miss B. Napier 2. Economical biscuits, Miss B. Napier 1. Best bloom, Mrs Clarkson, polyanthus, 1, Mrs Weston, poppy, 2, Mrs Dickens, jonquil 3. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames S. Edmonds, F. Mclean and Glee. The meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem. PATRIOTIC SOCIETY GAMES AND COMPETITIONS. The' usual fortnightly games night conducted by the Patriotic Society was field on Saturday evening. The winners in the games were:—Ladies’ aggregate, Mrs R. Low (trophy presented Dy Mrs Yarrell); men’s aggregate, Mr Walker and Mr E. Seymour (equal), Mr Walker winning the draw. The trophy was presented by Mr J. Hartley. Ladies’ booby trophy, Miss K. Henchman; men, Mr L. Cooper (trophy presented by Mr R. Low 7 ). The games for the evening resulted: —Ladies, Mrs Yarrell; men, Mr E. Seymour. A ham donated for competition by Mr J. McDonald realised £2 Is and was won oy Mr G. Higginson. A parcel of groceries for competition realised £1 12s 6d and was won by Mr J. Hull. The following goods were auctioned by Mr R. Kebbell: — Rhubarb given by Mrs E. Mcieari, realised 3s; polyanthus given by Miss S. Napier, realised 2s 6d; sponke cake given by Miss Thomas, realised 7s; biscuit barrel given by Mr B. Rolls, realised 12s. The total for the evening was £8 Is Gd. It was decided to send a donation of £lO each to the Emergency Clearing Hospital and to the Army and Navy Club. The hostesses fox- the evening were Misses K. Henderson and B. Napiei’ and Mrs G. Napier. Personal. At the annual speaking competition at the Dannevirke High School, Victor Payne came third in the junior class, his subject being “Fighter Pilots.” Miss Patsy Spring spent the weekend with Miss Z. Smith.
