CARTERTON
DANCE AND CARDS GATHERING AT PARKVALE. (“Times-Age” Special.) On Saturday evening the Parkvale Hall was crowded with visitors from all over the district, the occasion being a dance and euchre tourney, the proceeds from which will go toward the hall committee funds. The gathering was a most enjoyable one. Excellent music was supplied by Mrs V. J. Ashton’s orchestra and much appreciated extras were played by Misses V. Irwin, Lola and Rewa Hopkins, and Mr H. Morris. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr and Mrs George and a spot waltz by Mr and Mrs Alf. Knutson. Mr Dan Jensen was an efficient M.C. The winners in the card tournament were: Ladies, Mrs A. Knutson 1, Mrs Quin 2; men, Mr C. Bambry 1, Mrs C. Downes 2. Plague of Slugs. Gardeners are complaining of a plague of slugs, large quantities of young seedlings being eaten by them. One local gardener in two nights collected no less than six hundred slugs. Personal Items. Pte. Keith Lenihan was home on leave from the Territorial camp at Waiouru during the weekend. He returned to camp last night. Working Bee fat Bowling Green. Several members of the Carterton Bowling Club assembled at the green on Saturday when work was carried out in improving the green and surroundings. The club will officially open the season on Saturday week. OBITUARY MRS ADELAIDE McKENZIE. ■ After a • short illness there died at Carterton on Saturday night a highly respected resident in the person of Mrs Adelaide Blackall McKenzie, wife of Mr Edward McKenzie. Mrs McKenzie was taken suddenly ill during last week and failed to recover. The deceased was a native of Queensland, being born at Twoomba. She came, to New Zealand in 1905 and after her marriage in 1911 had resided in Carterton ever since. The late Mrs McKenzie interested herself in various social activities and was a leading spirit in the organisation of the Druids’ annual ball each year. Her many acts of kindness to neighbours at different times .endeared her tq all with whom she came in contact ahd her death will be deeply regretted by a. wide circle of friends. General sympathy will be ' expressed with Mr E. McKenzie in his bereavement. The funeral will take place on Tuesday, leaving her late residence, Faraday Street at 1.30 p.m. and will be preceeded by a service at the house at 1 p.m. ' Members of Totara Lodge No. 3 United Ancient Order of Druids, are requested to assemble at the lodge room at 12.45 p.m. to attend the funeral. The late Mrs McKenzie was the wife of the secretary of the Druids’ Lodge. GOLF MEDAL COMPETITION. The best cards returned in the medal competition played on the Carterton links on Saturday were as follows: — R. Harrington, 75, 5, 70; H. Dudson, 75, 4, 71; J. V. Gustofsen, 83, 12, 71; M. Knowles, 88, 17, '7l; A. E. Pankhurst, 78, 6, 72; R. Fisher, 76, 4, 72; L. H. Smart, 83, 11, 72; A. Broadbent, 97, 24, 73. LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIPS. The following are the results of Saturday’s games:— Senior championship:' Mrs Murray won from Mrs Colson. Junior championship: Miss Smart won from Mrs Johansen. Mrs Knowles was the winner of the Stableford with 32 points, Miss B. Peters being second with 31 points, and Miss V. Corlett third with 30 points. Chinese Business Premises. In the advertising columns today notice is given that all Chinese business premises will be closed on Friday next, October 10. Patrons are asked to place orders for fruit and greengroceries early this week to enable same to be delivered to suitable places of call on Friday.
