ACT OF PIRACY

SINKING OF I, C. WHITE,

DENOUNCED BY MR HULL.

(By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) NEW YORK, October 4.

The Standard Oil Company announced in New York that the tanker I. C. White, torpedoed in the South Atlantic, was transferred to Britain six months ago and that, pending transfer of flags, she was operated by the Panama Transport Company. The ship had sailed under British direction, though she had an all-American crew. It now appears that only 18 have been rescued so far.

Commenting on the sinking, the Secretary of State, Mr Hull, said: “This seems to be another act of lawlessness and piracy and attempted frightfulness in connection with a general movement to drive people off the Atlantic, which is part of the world movement of conquest.”
