4 Mr W. Candy, of Carterton, has returned from a trip to Australia. Privates W. J. Ritchie and S. N. Shirley and Bandsman F. Needham, who have been invalided home from overseas, arrived in Masterton this morning.

Sergeant Basil Falloon,- Masterton, who has been for the past 2 years on the Army Headquarters clerical staff, has received notice to proceed shortly to Waiouru Camp to join the N.Z. Tank Corps.

The many friends of Temporary Company Sergeant-Major J. K. Welch, who is a prisoner of war in Germany, will be pleased to learn that in a letter to his wife in Masterton he states that he is fit and well and is being well treated.

Mr J. Robertson, member,for Masterton, is leaving this evening on a tour of the northern portion of his electorate. He is visiting Eketahuna, Pongaroa, Akitio and Aohanga. He will proceed to Wellington on Tuesday. Prior to the commencement of business at last night’s meeting of the Masterton A. and P. Association a motion of condolence was passed with Messrs G. L. Sievers, C. Campbell, W. B. Martin, E. R. Rogers, W. G. Lamb and Mrs J. McLeod in their bereavements.

At a farewell gathering in Masterton last night Mr B. Olsen, who will leave shortly for the South Island, was presented with a well-filled wallet by a number of workmates with whom he had been associated in carrying out local waterworks operations. During the evening songs were sung by Messrs Logan, B. Gill and B. Olsen, and a most enjoyable time was brought to a close by the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.”

Mr W. H. Lee, of the staff of the Bank of Australasia, Masterton, has received notice of his transfer to the Bank’s Hastings branch. Mr Lee, who is the secretary of the Masterton Optimist Club, took a keen interest in the work of the Y.M.C.A. and he will be keenly missed. Mr Lee, who will leave Masterton on Monday, will carry with him the good wishes of a wide circle of friends.

A prominent farmer in the Maxwell district for many years, Mr F. H. Handley, died on Thursday night. He was born in 1879 and was the son of Mrs and the late Mr S. G. Handley, St John’s Hill, Wanganui. Mr Handley was a member’ of the Waitotara County Council, and served' on that body for many years. Because of ill health he recently resigned as a representative of the county on the District Council of Primary Production. The death has occurred at Auckland of Mr W. R. S. Brewer, president of the Waverley Racing Club. Son of the late Mr William Brewer one of the early settlers in the Waverley district, Mr Walter Brewer had been identified with the life of Waverley for a very long period. Meets at the “Waihau” homestead were among the most popular on the Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Club’s roster of the season. He bred and raced several horses with success.
