WATER MAINS RELINED

DIVERSION OF LOAN MONEYS. CLAUSE IN WASHING-UP BILL. A clause in the Local Legislation Bill authorises the diversion of certain loan moneys by the Masterton Borough Council. In 1940 the.council raised a loan of £10,500 for the cleaning and concretelining of the lOin. and 12in. water mains from the reservoir to Masterton and the 18in. spiral steel main from the Upper Plain Reservoir to the intake. The 18in. main was alongside a 12in. earthenware main which had been abandoned but on a thorough investigation being made of the whole line it was found that the 12in. earthenware main could be restored at very little expense. This was done and the pressure of water from this pipe has proved to be adequate for all requirements. The relining of the 18in. main was not proceeded with and it is proposed to reuse this main as part of a major water extension scheme some time in’the future. The abandonment of the relining of this main left the council with about £2640 of-the loan unexpended and the council sought authority to use this balance for undertaking the cement-lining of various borough reticulation mains not included in the original loan proposal. The diversion of this money has enabled the council to reline mains in the business area of the town —Chapel, Queen and Dixon streets and their connections.
