APPEALS HEARD

MEN FOR OVERSEAS SERVICE ARMED FORCES BOARD. BUSINESS AT MASTERTON SITTING. The No. 4 Armed Forces Appeal Board concluded its Wairarapa sitting at Masterton today, when a _ further eighteen appeals were dealt with. Mr W. F. Stilwell, S.M., presided. There were also present Messrs A. Parlane, P. Coyle and C. O. Bell (Crown representative). The board refused to re-open the case of W. J. Dwane, an appeal in respect to Sidney William Dwane, hairdresser, Carterton, which was dismissed at yesterday's hearing. The following cases were lodged on the grounds of public interest and undue hardship: F. Dennes, Greytown (Mr J. F. Thompson) appealed against the calling up of William Dennes, tractor driver. The appeal was dismissed subject to the reservist not being called up prior to January 31, 1942. The reservist was directed to continue serving in the Home Guard. An appeal by H. L. Gray, Senr., against Henry Lenton Gray, farm assistant, being called up was dismissed, subject to the reservist not being called prior to December 31, 1941. Mr Thompson, Greytown, appeared for the appellant. An appeal by Hodder Bros., against the calling up of Stanley William Joseph Hodder, farmer, was adjourned sine die, with the direction that he enlist in the Featherston Home Guard within 14 days. E. W. Allen (Mr H. H. Daniell), dairy farmer, Chester Road, Carterton, appealed against the calling up of Lawrence Patrick Jans, farm hand. The appeal, was adjourned sine die, with the proviso that the case would be reviewed on January 31, and that the reservist join the Home Guard within 14 days. B. Ruane, Waiorongomai, appealed against the calling up of Reginald Charles Lawrence, shepherd. The appeal was dismissed subject to the reservist not being called up prior to January 31. An appeal by Marguerite L. Evans (Mr Gawith) in respect to Edward Bilbie Evans being called up for service was adjourned sine die. In the case of Thomas Henry Snell, farm, hand, Ponatahi, Carterton, the appeal was adjourned sine die. Mr T. Jordan appeared for the employer, Mr Ward. Mr Stilwell explained to the appellant that he would have to face up to the fact that Snell would have to go into camp, as would, possibly, married men in some six months time. The following appeals were lodged on the grounds of undue hardship: An appeal by John Burnett Burt, storekeeper, Featherston, was dismissed, subject to the reservist not being called up prior to November 1, 1941. Cyril Knight Binstead, labourer, appealed against service. The appeal was dismissed. The Director of National Service appealed in the following cases, on the grounds of public interest: William Francis Whiteman, cheese factory hand, appeal adjourned sine die, with the direction that the reservist enter Territorial camp on May 1 for three months’ training. Donald Stuart Hay, shepherd, appeal dismissed, subject to the reservist not being called up prior to January 31, 1942.

Thomas Wilson Hume, dairy farmer, appeal dismissed subject to the reservist not being called up prior to December 31, 1941.

John Algar Temple, shepherd, appeal dismissed subject to the reservist not being called up prior to January 31, 1942. Frederick John Burrows, shearer, appeal dismissed subject to the reservist not being called up prior to January 31, 1942.

Sydney George Bubb, farm hand, appeal dismissed, subject to the reservist not being called up prior to December 31, 1941. An appeal lodged by the Director of National Service, on behalf of Arthur Henry Krahagen, boot merchant, on the grounds of undue hardship, was dismissed, subject to the reservist not being called up prior to October 31, 1941.

The following appeals were lodged cn the grounds of public interest and undue hardship (these were heard yesterday afternoon); H. E. Ward, storekeeper, Carterton (Mr Gawith) appealed against Walter Henry Ward, farm hand, being called up for service. The appeal was dismissed subject to the reservist not being called up prior to December 31, 1041.

An appeal by Sarah E. Lenihan on behalf of Samuel George Benge, dairy farmer, was dismissed on account of the non-appearance of the appellant. B. V. Bodie appealed against the calling up of John William Barnes, tyre rebuilder. Mr T. Cunningham appeared for the appellant. The appeal was dismissed, subject to the reservist not being called up prior to March 31, 1942.

Margaret H. Reynolds appealed on behalf of Gordon George Reynolds, dairy farm hand. Mr gtawith appeared for the appellant. Thmappeal was adjourned sine die with the direction that the reservist join the Carterton Home Guard within 14 days. The trustees of the estate of H. Goodin, Park Road, Carterton, appealed against the calling up of Gordon Thomas Goodin, dairy farmer. The appeal was adjourned sine die with the direction that the reservist join the Carterton Home Guard within 14 days. F. G. Benge (Mr Gawith), farmer, of Belvedere, appealed against the calling up of Reuben John Bond, dairy farm hand. The appeal was adjourned sine die and the reservist was directed to join the Home Guard at Carterton. Elsie May Gayfer, Carterton, appealed against the calling up of D’Arcy Russell Gayfer. Mr Gawith represented the appellant. The appeal was adjourned sine die, subject to review on February 28. The estate of D. H. Speedy (Mr H, H. Daniell) applied for an adjournment of service for Noel-Clifford Reynolds, shepherd. The application was granted, the reservist not to be called up until December 31, 1941, An appeal lodged by Ronald Davies, labourer, on the grounds of conscientious objection was struck out on account of the non-appearance of the reservist. The Director of National Service appealed against the calling up of Harold Cecil Mortenson, farmer. Tire appeal was adjourned sine die, to be reviewed on February 1, W. R, York (Mr J. F. Thompson) appealed against the calling up of Rex Scott, farm hand. The appeal was adjourned sine die, the reservist to continue serving in the Territorials.

pealed on behalf of Frederick Alexander Oliver, shearer. The appeal was adjourned sine die, subject to review on February 1. Murray McKay Ross (Mr H. H. Daniell) farmer, lodged an appeal on the grounds of public interest, for an adjournment of military service. The appeal was dismissed subject to the reservist not being called up prior to February 28, 1942. The Masterton Fire Board and the Director of National Service lodged appeals for postponement of service in respect to Noel Everitt and Vivian Montrose Richards, firemen, on the grounds of public interest. The board dismissed the appeals, subject to Richards not being called up prior to December 31, and Everitt on March 31. In evidence Superintendent T. B. Clarke stressed the fact that it was an impossibility to get men to take on the work.
