POTATO SEED
PLANTING HINTS. The size of seed and the distance at which it is spaced play an important part in the ultimate yield and the grade of tubers obtained. Large seed gives the largest yield in comparison with small seed, though the tubers obtained are smaller, and vice versa. Large tubers possess a greater number of sprouts than small ones. When the sprouts become weaned from the parent tuber, they each become, strictly speaking, separate plants. Thp larger the seed the greater number of plants it will produce, and the greater number of tubers. On the other hand, owing to the crowding, the size cf the tu'bers will be reduced. On the whole, there is a tendency to plant potatoes too closely. The distance should range from 12in for the smallest tubers to 20in for those of larger size.
