ACTIVITY AT OPAKI

HORSES IN HARD TRAINING MASTERTON RACES THIS MONTH. TEST FOR RICCARTON CANDIDATES. (By “The Grafter.”) The course at Opaki is becoming a scene of much activity in view of the spring meeting of the Masterton Racing Club on Thursday and Saturday. October 9 and 11. Several of the likely contestants at Opaki next week are shaping well and doubtless a substantial amount of the stake money will remain in Masterton. The course is in splendid order, thanks to the excellent work carried out by the custodian, Mr Rogers. Augment, White Rajah, Cheerful Lady, Happy Ending, Metonymy, Te Ore and Moderate are all striding along in a style which would suggest that they have good prospects for the popular Opaki meeting. Recent racing has doubtless improved the form of many of the Opaki and Taratahi-trained horses. The members of T. R. George’s team are in particularly good form and should give a splendid account of themselves. From the results at the Masterton meeting a line as to form for Wellington and Riccarton can usually be obtained, and more than one New Zealand Cup winner has competed at Masterton prior to participating in the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting. There may be produced at Opaki this month the winner of the 1941 New Zealand Cup. Every facility is being provided on the course for the convenience and comfort of patrons, and the train arrangements should be appreciated by the racing public from outside districts. The betting will be on the win and place system, and the first race will start at 11.45 a.m. each day. The acceptances are due to close at 9 o’clock on Monday evening next with the secretary, Mr N. H. James.
