BOROUGH AFFAIRS

CARTERTON COUNCIL MEETING LAST NIGHT. I SUGGESTED EXCHANGE OF LAND (“Times-Age” Special.) Cr E. McKen’zie (Deputy-Mayor) presided over the monthly meeting of the Borough Council held last evening, in the absence of the Mayor, Mr D.' L. Taverner. There were also present Crs. W. A. Hart, H. Mortensen, L. M. Clark, C. E. Stevens, W. R. Harry, Howard, E. Jackson and Miss O. W. Wolters. Apologies for absence were received from the Mayor and Cr de Lacey. The treasurer’s statement showed a credit balance in the District Fund account of £155 4s Id and to the Gasworks account of £978 9s 3d. Accounts amounting to £lOO9 Os 6d were passed for payment, including gasworks £604 19s sd. A deputation from the Carterton District High School, comprising Messrs H. J. McKenzie and J. Finn, waited upon the council in regard to the exchange of a section of land at the South School for one near the Holloway Street School. It was pointed out by the deputation that the exchange was for the purpose of laying down a basketball court, and it was thought if the exchange were possible the school committee could go on with the project in view and know they would not at any future date have to give up the ground and lose the value of their labour. While the deputy-mayor and councillors were in favour of the deputation’s request it was pointed out that the ground at the southern end would be of little use to the borough. However they thanked the deputation for bringing the matter before the council and stated that the question would be considered after councillors had inspected the school grounds at the south end. It was resolved that the overseer make arrangements for the installation of a new tar-boiling tank at the gasworks, The swimming baths are to be prepared and filled from the high pressure water service at the earliest opportunity. A building permit was granted Mr W. S. King for the erection of a new building in Broadway. It was reported that the question of installing a chlorinating plant for the borough came before the works committee, when it was decided to defer the question pending further information from prospective tendering firms. Tenders are io "oe called for fencing 25 chains of the new stock street.

It was resolved that as the borough was already a member of the Small Gasworks Association, it was decided not to become a member of the proposed gasworks association as laid down in a letter from Palmerston North.
