NOT SPEEDED UP

SOUTH ISLAND MAIN TRUNK LINE. STATEMENT BY MINISTER OF PUBLIC WORKS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. “I wish to correct any impression that work on the South Island Main Trunk Railway is being pushed ahead to the detriment of other works of national importance,” said tlje Minister of Public Works, Mr H. T. Armstrong, today: Mr Armstrong said the report that every effort was being made to have the northern section of the line open by the last week in December was incorrect, It was true that the plate-lay-ing gang had been doubled recently, but that was only because the men and materials were available and was not an effort to speed up the construction. Any impression that the line would be open for traffic in December should be removed. The total number of extra men employed on the northern section cf.the line in the last six weeks was only forty.
