Gift to War Chest.

A gift of £5OO to toe Government, to be used in the prosecution of the war was sanctioned unanimously at the half-yearly meeting of toe Otago district committee of toe M.U.1.0.0.F. on Saturday. The provincial corresponding secretary, Mr A. Sligo, who moved the vote, said that the lodges were exempt from taxation, but it was time that they did something substantial to support the war effort. The lodges, he added, should give consideration to subscribing almost to the limit of their capacity. The district’s combined funds totalled about £462,000, which "in the hands of an individual or another organisation would be liable to £15,000 a year in taxation as unearned income. By another resolution the meeting decided to cancel the affiliation of the Otago district with the Dominion Friendly Societies’ Council, which, it was stated, had failed lamentably in its task and no longer represented the opinion of the lodge in presenting cases.
