Storm in Hawke’s Bay.
Following upon winds of gale force which swept Southern Hawke’s Bay during the preceding 24 hours,, Dannevirke experienced an intense electrical storm which broke at 4.30 p.m. on Thursday. Heralded by loud thunder, and bright lightning, the storm swept down with the heaviest hail seen for many years. The largest hailstones were half an inch in diameter and, driven by the gale, stripped the blossoms from fruit trees. Old residents consider the size of the hail comparable to that which fell in the disastrous hailstorm of 1907. Some damage was done by lightning and wind to power and telegraph lines.
