MOTOR FATALITY
CAR STRIKES PEDESTRIAN DRIVER ARRESTED. REMANDED FOR TWO WEEKS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) HASTINGS, September 25. A fatal accident occurred near the Tomoana showgrounds last' night, a pedestrian being killed by a car. Subsequently the driver of the vehicle was taken into custody, and he appeared in the Magistrates’ Court this morning. The victim of the accident was:— James Andrew Pollock, boilermaker, Napier, a married man, aged 38. Mr Pollock was employed by Niven and Co., Napier, and was engaged on a job at the Tomoana works. Shortly after 8.30 o’clock he was walking along the main highway in the' vicinity of the showgrounds when he was struck by a car in which was a party of young men.
The police later arrested the driver of the car, Frank Robert Jamieson, Ongaonga Road, Waipukurau labourer, aged 19. He appeared before justices of the peace in the Magistrates’ Court this morning on a charge that while in a slate of intoxication he was in charge of a motor vehicle and by an act or omission in relation thereto caused the death of Pollock. Bail was allowed. Defendant was remanded for two weeks.
