CARTERTON

PETROL TAX INCREASE A STRONG PROTEST. (“Times-Age” Special.) A letter read by the County Clerk, Mr E. T. Beaven, at yesterday’s meeting of the Wairarapa South County Council, which stated that ‘‘an additional tax of Is lid per gallon of petrol on heavy traffic was to be imposed' brought forth a vigorous protest from councillors, and on the motion of Councillor C. A. Cameron, seconded by ’, Councillor L. S. Gallon, the Clerk was I authorised to write the authorities / strongly protesting against such an un- / just increase. Mr' Haeata. who resides on the Mar-tinborough-Masterton Highway, wrote asking for assistance in putting in a culvert near his property. It was resolved that permission be given to erect the culvert, providing it is done to the satisfaction of the County overseer. The Conservator of State Forests wrote asking the council to see that care was exercised regarding the lighting of fires in timber reserves, pointing out that fires were detrimental to the water' sheds of the district and were the cause of river erosion. The letter was received. The County Overseer was instructed to erect a cement water race crossing on the Kaiwhata Road. The overseer’s report on the work accomplished in various ridings dur - ing the month was adopted. Football Match Cancelled. Arrangements had been completed for a match to be played at Carterton on Saturday between the Wellington and Carterton seniors. Yesterday Mr Gordon Udy received a telegram from the Wellington Club expressing regret that the club was unable to complete the team for Saturday owing to members being engaged in military service. Personal Items. Inquiries made regarding the health of Mr H. T. Leete, a teacher on the staff of the ■ Carterton District High School, who is an inmate of Greytown Hospital, elicited the information that he passed a satisfactory night.

Church Service. A Church of England service will be held-at Waihakeke at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
