GREYTOWN
WOMEN’S DIVISION BUSINESS AT MONTHLY MEETING (“Times-Age” Special.) There was a large- attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Women’s Division of the Farmers' Union held in the Parish Hall yesterday afternoon. Mrs Beu made reference to the electrical cooking demonstration which was held recently in the Odd Fellows’ Hall, and said that she hoped that those who attended had benefited by the same.
Mrs Wiggins read extracts from the Dominion Conference remits. Mrs A. R. Barren, Masterton, president of the Wairarapa executive, sent good wishes to the Greytown branch.
Mrs Beu distributed navy wool to members to be knitted into warm garments (or comforts) for the men in the merchant service.
The annual Leper Appeal was well responded to. Besides a number of useful parcels, 34s in cash was collected during the meeting. Thanks were extended to Mesdames Bunny and Knell for used stamps. It was decided to make inquiries as to whether the restriction on ladies’ stockings could be lifted. An appeal for eggs for children’s orphanages was made. Those desirous of helping this appeal are asked to leave eggs at Mrs A. Johnson’s residence.
A. very instructive talk on gardening was given by Mrs Maitland of Carterton. Mrs Maitland explained the various ways of planting bulbs and flowers, and the manures to use to get the best results. She had brought several shrubs and flowers with her and explained how to choose exhibition bulbs and shrubs.
Mrs Beu presented Mrs Maitland with a shoulder spray made by Mrs Bayliss, and also thanked the speaker for her address and the very able way in which she had answered questions. Mrs Maitland said it was a pleasure to have been able t’o come to Greytown and pass on to others what she knew herself. The hostesses were Mesdames F. Dewhurst, C. Maxton, A. Humphrey and F. Judd. LADIES’ GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI-FINALS. The semi-finals of the championship will be played on Saturday, in conjunction with a flag match for Mrs Jury’s trophy. The draw will be: Miss Nix v Mrs Gold, 12.45 p.m.; Mrs McPhee v Mrs Mead, 12.49; Mrs Thompson v Miss E. Gregor, 12.53; Mrs Maddison v Mrs Jury, 12.57; Mrs R. Ingley v Mrs C. Ingley. 1.1; Miss J. Feast v Miss P. Tully, 1.5; Miss M. Collier v Mrs G. Ingley, 1.9; Miss R. Collier v Miss B. Gregor, 1.13; Miss M. Wood v Miss J. Bouzaid, 1.17; Mrs Gregor v Mrs Nicholson, 1.21; Miss Quinn v Miss Askew, 1.25; Mrs Wiggins v Miss Wiggins, 1.29; Miss Higginson v Mrs B. Skeet, 1.33; Miss Awa Feast v another. Hockey. The Uppei- Hutt hockey team will visit Greytown on Saturday, and in the evening a dance will be held in their honour. Personal. Miss M. A. Stringfellow, of the Wanganui Public Hospital, has been appointed to the position of inspecting masseuse under the Department of Health. Miss Stringfellow is the daughter of well-known and highlyrespected residents of Greytown, Mr and Mrs J. Stringfellow. Miss Stringfellow will be heartily congratulated upon the fact that the expert knowledge possessed by her in her profession is being recognised in official quarters.
