CARTERTON

DAIRY INDUSTRY INCREASE IN SUPPLY OF MILK. (“Times-Age” Special.) The supply of milk at the cheese factories in the vicinity of Carterton is increasing. At Dalefield yesterday eleven vats were in use which is about the same as last season. With a shower or two of warm rain it is expected that the yield will be increased considerably. OBITUARY MRS MARY CAMPBELL. The death occurred yesterday afternoon, from heart failure, of Mrs Campbell, wife of Mr Colin Campbell, of Clareville. Deceased, who was 70 years old, had only been ill a fortnight. Born at Rothshire, Scotland, she came to New Zealand with her husband in 1901, and had resided at Clareville ever since, Mrs Campbell was possessed of a kindly nature, and her death will be regretted by a very large circle of relatives and friends. She is survived by her husband, two sons and two daughters. The sons are Messrs Colin and Murdo Campbell, and the daughters Mrs D. Moon and Miss Mary Campbell, all of whom reside in the district. There are three grandchildren. The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon at the Clareville Cemetery, after a shortservice at deceased’s late home. Wairarapa Gun Club. The B grade clay bird championship will be decided on the Wairarapa Gun Club’s ground at Norfolk Road. Waingawa, at the weekend. It is expected that there will be a large number ot competitors. Railway Waggon Derailed. Word was received in Carterton yesterday afternoon that when a goods ' train was pulling into the Kaiioke railway station one of the vans left the line and blocked the traffic. As a result the 2.30 p.m. train from Carterton was unable to proceed over the hill and two Masterton busses were requisitioned to carry passengers and mails to connect with other trains over the hill. Blinded Soldiers Fund. An explanation of the assistance rendered to blinded soldiers from funds' set up for the purpose is given by Mr R. E. Selby, honorary secretary of the Commercial Travellers’ and Warehousemen’s Blind Soldiers and jailors Fund, Nos. 1 and 2. Mr Selby points out that Mr Charles Henry Humphries, of Hilton Road, Carterton, who is at present an inmate of the Blind Institute,- Auckland. the first blinded soldier -in the present war, was reported from Auckland to have been assisted by the trustees of the Blind Soldiers Fund, “who still hold about £ll,OOO subscribed during the last war.” “To avoid any misconception,” states Mr Selby, “Mr Humphries has not been assisted by money raised for soldiers who were blinded in the 1914-18 war. There are two funds —the Commercial Travellers’ and Warehousemen’s Blind Soldiers and Sailors Fund for those blinded in the last war, and the Commercial Travellers’ and Warehousemen’s Blind Soldiers and Sailors Fund (No. 2) for those blinded in the present war. Mr Humphries received assistance from the latter fund.” Personal. Mr J. J. Taucher, of Carterton, has found it necessary to enter the Masterton Hospital for treatment. Mr H. T. Leete’s many friends will regret to learn that he has had to enter the Greytown Hospital for treatment. Mrs M. D. Hornsby, of Paraparaumu, is the guest of Miss Armstrong, Park Road, Carterton. Terminating Building Society. At a meeting of directors of the Wairarapa Terminating Building Society, held last evening, and over which Mr L. H. Smart presided, Mr Neville Flemming, of Masetrton, was the successful tenderer at £l2O for the sale of £3OO. In an appropriation by ballot for £6OO, Mr A. H. Krahagen was successful. Boy Scouts. The weekly card party held by the Carterton Boy Scouts was held last evening. There was a large attendance. The prizes were won as folows: —Ladies, Mrs Finn 1, Mrs B. Challis 2. Men. Mr C. Holland 1, Mr A. Knutson 2.
