PATRIOTIC FUNDS

MEETING OF WELLINGTON COUNCIL. TRANSMISSION OF MONEY TO BRITAIN. Advice to the effect that organisations in New Zealand could not raise monies for transmission to corresponding organisations in Great Britain was received at the last meeting of the Wellington Provincial Patriotic Council, over which Mr T. Jordan (Mayor of Masterton) presided. The National Patriotic Board stated, however, that they could pay such monies into patriotic funds and ask that when monies were remitted to London for relief of distress, the needs of any special bodies or organisations stipulated be considered by the London committee with a view to a grant being made to them. It was agreed that local efforts should be made to meet local expenses of the Lady Galway Guild, the proceeds to be paid into the zone committees and that they meet the expenses. A grant of £250 was made to the British Sailors’ Society. The purchase of a talkie machine for men stationed near Wellington was left to the standing committee with power to act. The Masterton zone was granted an imprest of £2OO for rehabilitation.

Mr Jordan read letters from Masterton and Ross regarding the raising of patriotic funds by taxation. The hon. secretary stated that the matter could be discussed again at a conference to be held in November if it were desired.
