NO HALF MEASURES

IN ASSISTING RUSSIA MR HERBERT MORRISON’S ASSURANCE. STERN WARNING AGAINST COMPLACENCY. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, September 20. The Home Secretary, Mr Morrison, speaking at a conference of the Scottish Labour Party, said: “We assure the Government of the Soviet Union and its people, and I assure you. that we are determined to give every possible practical aid and assistance by the service of supplies and any other means that are open to us to aid the Soviet in its struggle. You need have no hesitation in accepting the assurance of Ministers on that point.”

A stern warning against complacency was given by Mr Emanuel Shinwell, the Labour M.P.. in a speech in Britain today. People, he said, just must not expect Russia to win the war for Britain, but must face the fact that before long they themselves would be engaged in a deadly struggle with the enemy. Assistance to Russia would make Britain’s task easier, and that assistance must be given speedily and in full measure.

The efforts in every part of the war production and defence measures must be redoubled, “otherwise we shall be exposed to the full blasts of Nazi domination.”

“We arc now emerging into total war,” Mr Shinwell added.

The First Lord of the Admiralty, Mr Alexander, yesterday expressed admiration for the Russian resistance. He said that the most fierce, bloody, and terrible battles ever witnessed were being fought in a scene of indescribable horror. Britain’s willingness to help Russia was marked by only physical limits. All that could be done was being done and would be done.
