KIEV STILL HELD

ACCORDING TO LATEST SOVIET NEWS BITTER AND CONTINUOUS BATTLE. RAGING IN SUBURBS. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) LONDON, September 21. The latest news from Russia suggests that the Russians are still in Kiev, where a bitter and continuous (battle- is raging in the suburbs. Piles of bodies and wrecked German tanks and armoured cars clutter the approaches to the city, and the Germans are still throwing in more troops.

The German High Command on September 19 claimed that the swastika flew over the Kiev citadel, and yesterday’s communique declared that after the higher leadership of the Soviet troops had fled the whole of the garrison of Kiev threw down theirarms and ceased further resistance. Today, however, the Germans says that mopping-up operations, house by house and street by street, are taking place. Berlin says that Kiev was gained by a surprise attack under a smokescreen. The defenders, it declares, have had to be dragged out one by one from their posts. The Russian midday communique yesterday stated: “Fighting continued all night along the entire front, being especially fierce at the gates of Kiev.”

Berlin admits that Marshal Budenny still has several million men at his disposal in spite of his withdrawal in the Ukraine. This, if true, would appear to indicate that Marshal Budenny has.again escaped the German encircling tactics. However, reports speak of savage fighting proceeding in a huge Russian pocket of resistance 12,000 square miles in area. The absence of Russian denials indicates that it is fairly certain that panzer divisions have stabbed deeply into the defences where the forces of Marshals Timoshenko and Budenny join. The Germans claim that Stuka and high-level bombers are keeping up a non-stop attack on the Russian forces east of Kiev, and bombers are also plastering the railway and roads leading to the new front line north and south of Kharkov.

A message from Moscow states that Russian forces are advancing slowly* but surely in the central sector and are mopping up enemy troops. The latest dispatch from the front reports that, one division under General Solvyev has recovered 14 villages and has advanced 13 miles. The fighting continues with the Red Army driving forward relentlessly. The situation at Odessa and on the central front has slightly eased for the Russians, but the Leningrad zone is the scene of unabated onslaughts. German efforts on the Leningrad front do not seem to have registered a perceptible advance during the week.

They face here a deep and dense zone of defences, to which the terms “outer” and “inner” defence “lines” are really inapplicable. The Germans, are rushing up reinforcements to FieldMarshal von Leeb, but it is questionable whether they do more than fill the gaps made by the enormous casualties.

Russian marines have routed Rumanian and German troops on one sector of the Odessa front, and the enemy has withdrawn to the mouth of the Dniester, which is many miles distant from the city.
