The research had been undertaken at the request of the Defence Department in view of the possibility of a repetition of the world scourge of 1918.

Dr Cluver admitted that many claims in the past had been unjustified, but said: “We are absolutely certain we have isolated the right germ and hope the vaccine we will soon prepare will be successful.”
