WOOL RESALES
AUCKLAND FARMERS’ UNION NOT SATISFIED. REQUEST FOR A REVISION. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, September 19. A reply from the Minister of Marketing, Mr Barclay, to a query by the Auckland Farmers’ Union as to whether any resale of New Zealand wool had been made at a profit by the British Government, and whether any allowance had been made in the new wool prices for an increase in the export price index of Britain, was discussed at a meeting of the executive of the union. The Minister had stated that certain quantities of wool had been sold to countries outside the United Kingdom wool control, but while the prices appeared to have shown a margin over the purchase price, the New Zealand Government had no knowledge of the expense incurred, and consequently of the net profit on sales. Dissatisfaction with the Minister’s attitude that if increased prices were being paid to British woolgrowers that was no argument for higher prices for Dominion wool was expressed, and a resolution was adopted as follows: “To the extent that resales of New Zealand wool to neutral countries show a profit to the Imperial Government, the prices of wool should be revised in the terms of the commandeer, which provide that prices shall be subject to a revision upward when the average prices from Britain show an increase of over 10 per cent.”
