RAID ON CAIRO
DEEP EFFECT IN MOSLEM COUNTRIES. CITY REGARDED AS SACRED. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) CAIRO, September 18. The Minister of Defence, Abdel Ahmen, issued a statement declaring that the raid on September' 15 had produced a deep effect on the Egyptians and also throughout the Moslem countries, where Cairo is regarded as a sacred city. ‘ A German communique admits the attack and states that planes bombed the aerodrome at Heliopolis, but says the distance between the city and the aerodrome is such that Cairo could not be hit by bombs intended for the airfield. The raid occurred in the early hours when the city was blacked out. The rising moon and cloudless sky helped the raiders, who dropped parachute flares. Incendiaries and explosives shattered houses and shops for nearly half an hour. Anti-aircraft defences were in action throughout. The Premier visited the wounded in hospital.
