FIGHTER OFFENSIVE

BIG BRITISH FORCES ENGAGED MANY ENEMY PLANES SHOT DOWN INCLUDING TWO ATTACKING RESCUERS. BOMBERS ESCORTED TO & FROM TARGET. I British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 11.38 a.m.) RUGBY, September 18. More than three hundred aircraft of the R.A.F. were employed in yesterday’s Fighter Command offensive. Heavy anti-aircraft fire and strong enemy fighter opposition were encountered, but a fight-, er squadron engaged in escort duties took bombers to their target and brought them back without interruption by German fighters. The total number of German planes probably brought down reaches double figures. The claims could not be verified, because pilots were unable to see the ultimate fate of their adversaries. The pilots reported that in many dogfights they saw Messerschmitts diving, out of control, into the thick haze which covered parts of the Channel and Northern France. A squadron which returned without loss saw a Spitfire pilot bale out in the sea. Immediately the squadron had touched down and refuelled, it returned to the spot, where it found four Messerschmitts diving on one of our rescue boats. Two of the enemy planes were shot down into the sea in flames. —
