NEW TYPE

OF MERCHANT SHIP DESIGNED IN UNITED STATES. LOW COST AND QUICK CONSTRUCTION. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received, This Day, 1.15 p.m.) WASHINGTON, September 18. The Navy Department announced today that a cargo ship of revolutionary design can be produced in hundreds in a much shorter time than the present types. The new craft is light in weight, of simple construction and low cost—-both construction and maintenance. The first freighter of this type, named the Sea Otter, is 270 feet in length, carries 1,500 tons of cargo and displaces 1',900 tons. Freighters can be built inland and taken to the sea by way of a river or canal. A real revolution in design has been wrought in the-application of power. Means have been discovered of driving a six-foot propeller amidships, instead of at the stern, using sixteen petrol engines. The machinery is similar to the vertical shaft which can be used for outboard motors. Navy engineers say that Sea Otter’s, after they have been standardised, can be produced in two months’ building time, using many yards, and possibly may offset tonnage submarined.
