EFFECTIVE BOMBING
RAIDS ON LIBYAN PORTS & SICILY EXTENSIVE DAMAGE DONE. RESUMPTION OF ACTIVITIES IN ABYSSINIA . (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day. 10.25 a.m.) RUGBY. September 18. A R.A.F. Middle East communique states: “The harbours at Juliana, Tripoli, and Benghazi were attacked by heavy bombers of the R.A.F. and aircraft of the Fleet Air Arm during the night of September 16. The results of the bombing were obscured by low cloud, but pilots of the aircraft over Benghazi saw a tanker at the Juliana mole which had been hit by heavy bombers on a previous occasion. At Tripoli a large number of bombs fell in the target area. A number of stores at Bardia were raided and large fires resulted from the bombing. “Many factories at Ligata, in Sicily, were raided in daylight yesterday by bombers of the R.A.F. Two sheds north of the factory were hit. One exploded and the target collapsed. Large buildings in the centre and south of the factory were demolished and one big shed was repeatedly hit. Clouds of smoke, visible for many miles from the target, rose into the air after the attack. “In Ajbyssinia R.A.F. bombers attacked enemy positions in north-east of Ozozo. Bombs burst among trenches.”
