Flight Lieutenant F. W. Petrie has been promoted temporary squadron leader in the general duties branch in the R.N.Z.A.F. Mr George Briggs, New Zealand Y.M.C.A. secretary, recently returned from service overseas, who visited Masterton last night, returned to Wellington this morning. During his stay in Masterton, Mr Briggs was the guest of Mr and Mrs H. E. Either, Lansdowne. The Wellington East seat, which is held by the Minister of National Service, Mr Semple, is to be contested at the general election by Mr L. T. Jacobsen, a Wellington business man. who was last night selected as the official National Party candidate. In response to a cable inquiry, Mr and Mrs A. V. Faulknor, of Lansdowne, have received advice from the International Red Cross, Geneva, to the effect that their son, Private Bob Faulknor, who was reported missing in Crete, is a prisoner of war in Germany. He is wounded, but is doing well. Mr Angus Mcßean. son of the Rev. A. Mcßean and Mrs Mcßean. Ashburton, has been appointed to a position in the British Legation in Berne. Mr Mcßean was formerly on the staff of an Auckland paper, and for the last six years he has been in charge of the English section of the International College at St. Gall, Switzerland. Two of the three New Zealand representatives to attend the forthcoming conference of the International Labour Organisation in New York have been chosen, according to an announcement last night by the-Minister of Labour, Mr Webb. He said that the Federation of Labour had selected Mr Eddy, M.L.C., and the employers had chosen Mr B. Sutherland. Mr Webb added that the Government’s nominees had not yet been decided. The Association Board of the Royal Schools of Music, London, has awarded the 1940 scholarship for pianoforte to Mr Paul Magill, M.A., a Wellington pianist. This scholarship entitles the winner to two years free tuition at the Royal Academy of Music, London. Mr Magill will probably take advantage or the opening given him, but that cannot be till after the war. Mr Magill, who is 21 years of age. has been a student at Victoria College, and this year has been engaged at the Teachers' Training College, Kelburn. Mr Magill has also been awarded the prize for the highest marks in the licentiate examinations of 1940 for the North Island. He is also a gold medallist and an L.T.C.L. of Trinity College.
