A GOOD YEAR
WAIRARAPA AUTOMOBILE . ASSOCIATION DEVELOPMENT OF CAMPING GROUNDS. SAFETY FIRST CAMPAIGN. The twenty-ninth annual report of the Wairarapa Automobile Association, for the year ended August 31, 1941, states, inter alia:— “Finance: The year commenced with a credit balance at the Bank of New Zealand of £46 6s Id, and £B5O in the Post Office Savings Bank, and closed with £ll3 3s 2d at the Bank, £BOO 3s in the P. 0.5.8., £5OO on fixed deposit, and £5OO invested in a local body lean. Subscriptions for the year total £3,248 2s Bd, compared with £3,243 3s 4d the previous year. "Membership: The membership at the commencement of the year was 4091, and at the close 3902. The number of members elected during the year was 307, while deletions, deaths and transfers number 496. One hundred and fourteen members are on. active service.
“Masterton Agency: The office and writing room opened in the State Theatre Building last year has not been used to any great extent. Financial members and their wives are welcome to make use of the facilities offered —reading, writing and tea. Subscriptions may be paid at the office, and information relating to Automobile Association activities may also be obtained. “Mt. Holdsworth Camping Ground: These beautiful grounds are becoming more and more popular with local and visiting motorists. During the year more planting has been carried out. “Featherston Camping Ground, No. 2: The area purchased last year in Featherston for the purpose of establishing an up-to-date motor camp to take the place of the one on the Rimutaka Hill Road, is now taking shape. Most of the trees have struck, and in time this ground will be one of the best in the Wairarapa. “Get You Home Service: The number of members (including members of other associations) who macle use of this service during the year was 126. the cost to the association being £lO6 3s 9d. . . . “ ‘Safety First’ Campaign: In the interests of the education of children in ‘Safety First' methods, your committee has purchased a projector and suitable films, and moving pictures depicting the necessity for caution on roads and proper methods to observe in crossing streets will be shown in all schools in the association’s district during the coming year, commencing immediately. “Signposting: Owing to petrol' rationing, only urgent work was undertaken. The sum expended on new work and maintenance was £135 Ils Bd, on which a subsidy of £26 Ils was received from the- Main Highways Board. . . . “The Wairarapa Automobile Association Mutual Insurance Company: Established in 1915 and still going strong. The company has again experienced a successful year, and a bonus of £3OOO has been declared. . . . “War: As a practical effort the association is supplying the Home Guard and E.P.S. Units in the Wairarapa with electric torches. . . . “Thanks: The thanks of the association- are due to the various Government departments and local bodies for their continued co-operation, the police, traffic inspectors, and the Press.” The report is signed by the president, Mr H.
