NEON SIGNS

EXTRA HOURS GRANTED WAIRARAPA POWER BOARD’S DECISION. RECOMMENDATIONS ADOPTED. (“Times-Age” Special.) The recommendation from a special committee set up by the board that the service to Neon sign users in the district be extended to 41 hours per week was adopted at today’s meeting of the Wairarapa Electric Power Board. The Managing Secretary, Mr Geo. Brown. submitted a detailed report on the position concerning Neon signs. Mr Brown said that in May it was estimated that to keep within the limits fixed by the Electricity Controller, it would be necessary to reduce the unit consumption by 608.000 units per annum. To give effect to that the board decided, amongst other things, that all exterior Neon signs be ' disconnected and all charges discontinued and permits for new signs be refused. At a meeting of the board on August it was decided to ease the restrictions by providing for a 24-hours per week service. Since the last meeting of the beard the committee, appointed to investigate the position regarding the use of Neon signs during the period of restrictions, conferred with the committee representing the Neon sign users and considered the whole question. The committee recommended that the hours, during which the signs may be used, be increased to 41 hours per The committee also recommended - that the periods suggested by the Neonjf sign committee be agreed to except that Carterton. Greytown, and Featherston signs be on a 6-day service a week, excluding Sunday, on the same basis as Masterton over-verandah signs. It was further recommended by the board’s committee that the charge for the 41 hours service be 75 per cent of the existing fiat rate charge for 24 hours service. It was decided to adopt the committee's recommendations, and to point cut to the committee of Neon sign users that the Board’s policy had been changed because the board had not known that the users would be charged rental for the signs although they were not being used.
