HOUSEWIFE’S NOTEBOOK

SOME USEFUL HINTS. When making a baked custard warm the milk before adding the eggs and sugar. This will prevent the appearance of the watery substance some-times-found in a baked custard. A hot cloth wrapped around jelly or ices will help them to come out of the moulds without sticking. When picking poinsettia flowers for vases be sure to strip the stalks for about an inch. Let the san drain for a short while and then stand the stems in hot water for three minutes. The flowers will last a week ,-if treated in this manner. To keep amber in good condition wash it in warm soapy water and dry with a soft towel. Then polish with a cloth dipped in olive oil. This will make the amber sparkle. A sheet of paper placed under plates when warming them will prevent the direct heat from reaching them, and thus the plates won’t crack.
