CARTERTON
BOWLING CLUB ANNUAL MEETING OF MEMBERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) There was an attendance of twentyfive members at the annual meeting of the Carterton Bowling Club last night. Mr Gordon Hughan occupied the chair. The meeting was the most enthusiastic held by the club for some years. Prior to the commence of the business the chairman referred to the ■death of Mr Charles Nicolson, who was formerly the club's green keeper. A vote of condolence to the relatives was passed, members standing in silence for a few moments as a mark of respect to his memory. The president submitted a comprehensive report. He said that in the early part of last season a deputation from the tennis club waited upon the management committee and asked that the' tennis grounds be leased to them, and this was agreed to. Several members had during the season made handsome donations to the club. The club’s social gathering and dance at the end of the season was a great success and a suggestion was thrown out that it be made an annual affair.
The report was adopted. The match recorder’s report showed that the competitions played during the season were won as under: —Champion Singles, F. Harrington; Champion Fairs, F. Harrington and Reg. Thompson, who also won the Centre fixture; Fours, Messrs E. Smith, T. G. Underhill, C. H. Barber and Geo. Hart (s); Progressive Pairs, Messrs E. T. Beaven (lead) and A. C. Tucker (skip); .DeLacey Buttons, Messrs J. L. Harris and C. J. DeLacey; Masson Cup, Messrs Smith, Underhill, Barber and G. Hart (s); Colts Singles, Mr H. Colson. The reports of the Green Committee, Refreshment Committee, and Social Committee were read and adopted. The election of officers resulted as follows: Patron, Mr Gordon Hughan; president, Mr F. L. Barr; vice-presi-dent, Mr Carl Larsen; secretary and treasurer, Mr C. H. Barber; auditor, Mr C. C. Callender; official match recorder, Mr C. J. DeLacey; bowl examiner, Mr W. F. Stent; match committee, Messrs C. C. Callender, Geo. Riggs and C. J. Delacey; green committee, Messrs G. Hughan and Hy. Simmonds; Refreshment committee, Messrs W. H. Whyte and F. Harrington; social committee, Messrs W. C. M. Sorensen, C. Larsen,- J. C. Harp and F. Harrington; general committee, Messrs Hughan, Callender, Beaven, Harrington, Riggs, Harris, Simmonds, and president and vice-president ex-officio; delegates to Centre, Messrs Stent, Barr and Larsen. It was resolved that the trophies won during the season be presented at the annual social gathering and dance at the end of the season. It was resolved that in connection with the champion fours members select their own teams with a proviso that recognised measures and skips play in no other positions. The champion singles and pairs are to be decided on a two-life system and that the conditions for the pairs be the same as last season. It was decided to recommend the delegates to the Centre to support the playing of the Booth Cup and Shield fixtures on the same lines as last year. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr E. Kilmister for the keen, interest he has taken in the club’s affairs. Votes of thanks were accorded to the ladies for their valued assistance during the past season and to everyone who had helped the club.
BOY SCOUTS CITIZENS COMMITTEE MEETS. Mr A. Patterson presided over a meeting of the Citizens’ Committee of the Boy Scout movement in Carterton. The meeting was called principally to deal with matters concerning the Scout Den. It was reported that a wooden floor had been laid over the existing concrete and that later on other improvements would be made to the building. It was decided that the Scoutmaster’s Warrant is to be sent for and that necessary Scout articles be purchased. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE COMPETITION WINNERS. The meeting of the Carterton Women’s Institute was held in the Masonic Hall yesterday, when there was a gtvod attendance of members. The Arts ana Crafts Circle was in charge of the meeting, Mrs W. S. Steven (convenor) being in the chair, with Mrs G. Steffert taking the duties of secretary. A vote of sympathy with Mrs P. Beere in the loss of her mother was carried, the members standing in silence for a few moments. A letter was received from the Institute for the Blind asking members to undertake the sale of goods at the Carterton P. and A. Show. It was agreed to accede to this request. Mrs A. Pink and Mrs A. Knutson Were appointed delegates to attend the half-yearly council meeting at Carterton on October 17. It was resolved that the usual number (10) of unaddressed soldiers’ parcels be forwarded to the Borough Council for dispatch overseas. The competitions, which were judged by Mrs D. N. Adams resulted as follow:—Jai’ of marmalade, Mrs A. Knutson 1, Mrs M. J. Woods 2, Mrs W. Williams and Mrs G. Steffert equal 3; something new from something old, Mrs A. Knutson 1, Mrs A. Adams 2, Mrs G. Steffert 3. These garments together with others donated by members were handed in to the Lady Galway Guild. A competition for a side of bacon donated by Mrs H. J. Brown was won by Mrs R. Hall, Mrs R. B. Sayer being
second and Miss L. Smith third. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mrs Brown for her generosity. A clever competition entitled “Nursery Rhymes,” was won by Mrs De Norvelle. Mrs J. Johnston contributed two vocal solos and Miss M. Stent a pianoforte solo which were much enjoyed. Each performer received a shoulder spray. There was a delightful and varied assortment of crafts on display, these being the work of members of the Carterton, Dalefield, Matarawa and Parkvale institutes. WAIRARAPA SEAT ADDRESS BY MR J. J. MAHER. Mr H. J. Bassett, chairman of the Carterton branch of the Carterton National Party Committee, presided over a large and very enthusiastic meeting of supporters held in the Masonic Hail Carterton. last evening. Mr Bassett introduced the party’s nominee, Mr J. J. Maher, .to those present. Mr Maher said that he was pleased to be received by such an enthusiastic meeting. He was accompanied by Mrs Maher and his daughter, who were also given a warm welcome, Mrs Maher being presented with a beautiful posy by Miss O. W. Wolters. During his address Mr Maher received a sympathetic hearing and waS applauded throughout. At the conclusion a hearty vote of thanks proposed by Mr Knowles and seconded by Mr V. L. Robinson, was carried by acclamation. Supper was afterwards provided. Farewell Social Gathering. Residents of the Clareville district will on Monday evening at the Clareville Hall tender a farewell social gathering and make a presentation to Mr and- Mrs Neil Hannah, who have resided in the district for many years, who will shortly leave for Otaki where Mr Hannah has accepted a position with the Otaki Dairy Company. During their residence in Clareville, Mr and Mrs Hannah have associated themselves with movements for the advancement of the interests of the district. The ladies attending are asked to provide a basket.
Hockey Teams. The following will represent the Carterton junior hockey team against Dalefield at Carterton at 1.30 p.m. on Saturday in the final of the Cole-Bur-gess Cup:—D. McKenzie, D. Williams, B. Goodin, H. Abbott, R. Andrews, N. Archer, L. Fitzgerald, J. O’Keefe, D. Gallon, B. Hopkins and lan Butcher. The Carterton. Junior A ladies’ hockey team to play Excelsior at Carterton at 2.45 p.m. tomorrow will be: Thea Goodin, A. Williams, N. Williams, M. Campbell, B. Merwood, B. Matson, B. Parker, R. Hopkins, B. Lindop, D. George, L. Hopkins. Church Services. Church of England services will be held at Ahiaruhe at 11 a.m. and at Parkvale at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Personal Items. A “parcel evening” will be tendered Miss C. Wadham at the Clareville social hall tonight, being the eve of her marriage. Mr T. Udy’s orchestra will provide the dance music. The Grand Master, Bro. C. O. Jorgensen, and officers of the Wellington District Management Committee of the Manchester Unity Order of Odd Fellows will officially visit the Heart of Oak Lodge, Carterton, on Monday night. Leading Aircraftman Geo. Brown, son of Mr and Mrs George Brown, Carterton, is spending leave in Carterton. The friends of Mrs Bennett, of Wyndham Street, will regret to learn that she has found it necessary to ■enter the Masterton hospital for medical treatment. Fcctball Club’s Dance. The Carterton Football Club will hold a championship dance in the Masonic Hall, Holloway Street, on Wednesday next. The trophies won during the football season will be presented and the opportunity will also be taken to make a presentation to one of the club’s prominent players, Leading Aircraftman Geo. Brown. Udy’s orchestra will provide the music. New Books in Library.
