HEALTH OF COMMUNITY LARGE NUMBER OF UNFIT MEN. MINISTER PRESENTS FIGURES TO HOUSE. « (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day., “I think it was with something *of dismay that the people of this country learnt of the unfortunate position we were placed in by the large number of men who failed to pass as fit for members of the armqd services," said the Minister of Health, Mr Nordmeyer, when speaking on the Social Security Amendment Bill in the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon. The Minister gave figures compiled up to three months ago. Of the 5225 men examined for the Navy, 1947 were classified as unfit, said’ the Minister. Men examined for the Air Force totalled 11.350. of whom 4600 were unfit. Mr Polson (Opposition. Stratford): It is a pretty strict examination. The Minister said that, of the 146.290 men examined for the Army, 53,000 were unfit. Of a total of 162,865 men examined. 59.000. or approximately 38 per cent., wore unfit. Mr Lee (Democratic Labour.
