CARTERTON
COURT SITTING CIVIL AND OTHER CASES. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., presided over the monthly sitting of the Carterton Magistrate’s Court yesterday afternoon. In a civil case, W. Booth and Co. v L. D. Udy, claim £1 12s lOd, judgment was given for plaintiff by default with costs 11s. In the case, Joe Lum v A. G. Byrne, claim £4 13s, there was no appearance of defendant, who was ordered to pay the debt forthwith, in default four days in Welh’ngton gaol. The New Zealand Dairy Factories Industrial Union of Workers claimed from T. W. Bond the sum of £2 6s. Defendant was ordered to pay forthwith, in default two days in Wellington gaol. P. Henderson was ordered to pay Joe Lum balance of account £1 8s lOd forthwith, in default two days in Wellington gaol. The police proceeded against A. W. Bradbury for having driven a motor truck on August 16 without due care and attention. Defendant was convicted and fined £3 with costs 10s. M. J. Costello was charged by Trafic Officer C. S. Nicholson, with not holding a current motor driver’s licence, and also with not carrying a warrant of fitness. Defendant was fined 10s, with 12s costs, on each count.
WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MEETING AT PARKVALE. Mrs D. Adams presided over the monthly meeting of the Parkvale Women’s Institute, there being a good attendance of members. A letter was received from the Y.M.C.A. thanking the members for the donation of a box of cakes received for the boys’ Sunday night tea. Mesdames Peacock and Rose were elected to represent the institute at a council meeting. Mrs H. Barnicoat gave a most interesting travel talk and was accorded a hearty vote, of thanks and presented with a shoulder spray. The monthly competitions judged by' Mesdames Groube and Neilson, of Dalefield, resulted: Kisses, Mrs L. Rayner 1, Mrs McKinnon 2, Mrs C. Jensen 3; flowers, Mrs L. Rayner 1, Mrs H. Rayner 2, ' Mrs M. McKinnon 3. Juniors: Kisses, Miss M. Luckie 1, MSss A. Franks 2; flowers, Miss H. McKifmoii 2. The hostesses were Mesdames King, McKenzie, J. Phelp and L. Nolan. Soldiers’ Parcels. The Women's Division of the Farmers’ Union will hold a card evening in the Eandroom on Saturday evening, the proceeds from which will be devoted to arranging Christmas parcels for soldiers overseas. The ladies’ who are running this evening will be grateful for assistance for their worthy object. National Party. Mr J. J. Maher, the National Candidate for Wairarapa, will deliver an address . to members and supporters of the Party tonight in the Masonic Hall, Carterton at 8 o’clock. Personal. Mr H. A. Truman, Inspector of Health, who has been in charge of the Wairarapa district for some time past, will shortly be leaving the district having accepted a position with the Dannevirke Borough Council as Engineer and Inspector. Mr Truman, in company with his temporary successor. Mr Pomare, visited Carterton and other South Wairarapa towns yesterday. Daffodil Fair Tomorrow. Members of the Carterton Methodist Church Ladies’ Guild will hold their annual Daffodil Fair in the Carterton Bandroom, Holloway Street, tomorrow. This annual fixture is always looked forward to with interest, and as there is a profusion of beautiful narcissi blooms this year, patrons to the fail - can confidently look forward to seeing an excellent exhibition of these beautiful blooms, which will be on sale. There will also be a good supply of produce, cakes, sewing, etc., in the stalls for which a ready sale is anticipated. Morning and afternoon tea will be available. Parking of Cars. The Wairarapa South County Council gives notice to .the public that anyone parking . motor vehicles on any road in the vicinity of the Clareville Racecourse, other than west of the railway line, on Saturday next, during the Carterton race meeting, is > liable on conviction to a penalty of £lO. Women's War Service Auxiliary. There was a good attendance at the first of a series of weekly lectures on canteen cooking, which was given by Miss Kitchen in the P. and A. rooms. Carterton, under the auspices of the Women's War Service Auxiliary. All present displayed much interest in the subject discussed, and members are looking forward with enthusiasm to the next talk. Golf. Owing to the Carterton races being held on Saturday, no golf will be played that day. Parcel Evening. A parcel evening will be tendered to Miss C. Wadham by her Clareville and Carrington friends tomorrow evening, on the eve of her marriage. Wairarapa South County. The Wairarapa South County Council gives notice in today’s issue of its intention to make and strike rates over the area under the jurisdiction of the county. The meeting for the purpose will be the ordinary monthly one to be held on September 25.
