Against Defences of Leningrad THE RUSSIAN COUNTER-ATTACKS IMPORTANT EXTENSIONS REPORTED LONDON, September 10. Russian troops continue to fight stubbornly along the entire front, a Russian communique states. On Monday, 59 German aircraft were destroyed in dogfights and on enemy aerodromes. The Russians lost 27 planes. The Germans made several attempts to raid Leningrad, but invariably were driven back. Some isolated planes broke through and bombed the city. Several houses were set on fire. Thirty-one German planes were destroyed on the approaches to or over the city. The Germans claim to be hurling the greatest mass of planes ever used in the war against Leningrad’s defences. They are going all out to reach a quick decision. Russian counter-attacks 40 miles north-east of Smolensk are reported by the enemy. Moscow states that there is a big counter-attack in the Gomel area. Marshal Budenny’s forces are said to be counter-attacking in the Dnieper Valley.
