WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATIONS BANNIN SHIELD FINAL. EASY WIN FOR CARTERTON. The Wairarapa Hockey Associations' competitions were continued on Saturday under unfavourable conditions. Results at a glance:— Senior Men. (Final Bannin Shield.) Carterton 10, Wesley 1. Junior Men. (Semi-final Cole Burgess Cup.) Carterton 4, Wairarapa College 2. Dalefield a bye. Senior Ladies. Carterton 7, Kia Ora 1. Excelsior won by default from Te Ore Ore. Greytown won by default from Old Girls. Junior Ladies. Carterton A 7, Featherston 3. Excelsior 2, Martinborough 1. BANNIN SHIELD CARTERTON v WESLEY.
Carterton and Wesley met at Carterton on Saturday in the final of the Bannin Shield on a very soft ground, which militated against good play. Through the school holidays being held Wesley were without the services of their captain and goal-keepei- and played short, which to a large extent accounted for the big score against them. Carterton attacked from the start but Wesley held them from scoring until Fisher goaled. Shortly after Hooper scored two goals in quick succession. Wesley attacked but were soon defending again and from a shot saved by Gibbs, Hooper followed in and scored. Wesley attacked from the bully and Reeves had a shot but Ward saved the ball going down the field with Carterton again attacking. Hooper again added to the score. At half-time Carterton led by 5 goals to nil. On resuming Carterton soon attacked, and Gibbs made two quick saves. Jackson then had a shot but missed. From the 25 Ward, from the right wing, scored for Carterton. Wesley then attacked, but were unable to penetrate the defence. R. Harrington being offside spoiled a good opportunity to score. Carterton then had quite a spell in Wesley’s half of the field. From the 25 yards area Hooper scored. Worsfold made a solo run from the half-way bully but Gibbs saved the shot. Jackson following in, however, scored. Carterton attacked and Gibbs again made two quick saves, but Fisher was handy and found the net. Another shot by Jackson • was saved by Gibbs and one shot by Fisher missed. Wesley attacked for a period, and were eventually rewarded by Reeves, who after a solo run, scored. Carterton attacked. during the closing stages. Gibbs made two good saves, but a shot by Jackson gave him no chance of preventing a goal. The game ended, Carterton 10, Wesley 1. Messrs L. Gallon and Moor were umpires.
COLE-BURGESS CUP Next Saturday Dalefield and Carterton will play the final of the Cole Burgess junior knockout at Carterton. THIRD GRADE In the third grade competition Scouts and Carterton drew 3 goals each. These teams will jointly hold the Worsfold Cup for the season.
