HARRIER ACTIVITIES

KIATERE CLUB CARTER-BURGESS TROPHY. WON BY W. BURGESS. The final handicap race of the season was held on Saturday when senior runners of the Kiatere Harrier Club competed for the Carter-Scrimshaw trophy over a 6,} mile course. Throughout the race the going was fairly heavy. R. Thomson, on • the lOmin. mark, was first away followed by W. Teahan. Then came L. Frances and Al. MacDonald, followed by W. Burgess and then W. MacDonald off scratch. At the end of the first lap Thomson still maintained a big lead, but was finding the going extremely difficult. W. Teahan was next, followed by W. Burgess. Burgess passed Teahan half-way round the second time and in a thrilling finish headed Thomson who had run himself to a standstill. Teahan also finished fast to pass Thomson 5 yards from the tape. Detailed results: —W. Burgess (lmin.), 1; W. Teahan (2.30 min. 2; R. Thomson (lOmin.), 3. Fastest times: W. Burgess, 38.45, 1: W. MacDonald, 39.20, 2; W. Teahan, 41.10, 3. The junior members held a 3 1-8 mile open handicap for a trophy presented by one of the club's supporters, Mr J. Carter. D. Cunningham on the limit, was first away followed sometime later by A. Pickett. S. Pickett headed the middle markers, and then came G. Hayes from a back mark. Cunningham maintained his lead throughout the race and finished determinedly to win from A.- Pickett, with G. Hayes finishing very fast in third place. Detailed results: D. Cunningham' (Bmin.), 1; A. Pickett (3.30 min.), 2; G. Hayes (lOsecs.), 3. - Fastest times: G. Hayes, 20.22, 1; A. Pickett, 23.41, 2; S. Pickett, 23.59, 3. Next week the official closing of the season will take place at the Y.M.C.A. buildings, starting at 2.30 p.m. Runners will be divided up into teams and a relay race will be held.
