HEAD-ON COLLISION
FOUR PERSONS INJURED VIOLENT IMPACT ON STRAIGHT ROAD. I ACCIDENT NEAR OTANE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) HASTINGS, September 6. As a result of a head-on collision between two motor-cars on the main road near Otane cemetery this morning, four people are in hospital. They are:— Mr F. H. Galvin, Gisborne, injuries to an arm, cuts on face, chest injuries and shock. Mrs Galvin, fractured leg, cuts about head, shock. Mrs R. Heffer, Opapa, concussion, serious cuts about head and face. Miss Kathleen Heffer, concussion and head injuries. Her condition is serious. Mr Galvin, who is manager of the Gisborne Sheepfarmers’ Frozen Meat Co., Ltd., with Mrs Galvin, was travelling to Wellington from Gisborne in a light car, which Mrs Galvin was driving. With her daughter as passenger, Mrs Heffer was driving a heavy car toward Hastings. The cars met head-on in a violent impact on the straight stretch of road near the cemetery. The lighter car was totally wrecked, its occupants being lucky to escape alive. The heavier car finished up still headed toward Hastings and damaged onlyin the front part. All four people involved in the accident received severe shock and were unable to say at the time exactly what caused the accident. The road at that point is straight, wide and tarsealed, and the visibility is good. First aid was given by 'other motorists, and Mrs Heffer and her daughter was taken to the Memorial Hospital, Hastings, while Mr and Mrs Galvin were taken to the Waipukurau District Hospital.
