USX TOURNAMENT WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP. WON BY MISS COOKE. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.15 p.m.) NEW YORK, September 7. Miss Cooke won the national women’s championship at Forest Hills, defeating Miss P. Betz (American women’s indoor champion in 1939), 7/5, 6/2. The match was played in a high wind. The first set was hard-fought all the way and was uncertain until Miss Cooke scored the first service break in the twelfth game. The second set Miss Cooke wen as she pleased.
