MASTERTON BRANCH. BUSINESS AT MONTHLY MEETING. At the monthly meeting of the Masterton branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union Miss Tankersley occupied the chair Mrs Jansen led the devotions and called for special prayers in keeping with his Majesty’s call to prayer on September 7. • The District Secretary’s report of the executive meeting held in Wellington, was read, containing the resolutions passed with regard to moral and social reforms and liquor laws, and that the book on non-alcoholic drinks be sent to Aunt Daisy asking that she use these recipes to be called "Win the War Cocktails.” The reports on the Band of Hope and L.T.L. work in the district were considered very encouraging. Notice of the District Convention to be held in Johnsonville on September 23 was received. Mrs Jansen read as a temperance fact a brief article as follows:—“Eric Liddell, British Olympic runner, holder of the world’s ’,-mile record said: •If alcohol is a good thing, why do athletes cut it out in training. One of the greatest athletes Scotland ever produced, whom thousands went to see, ruined his career through drink, and ended by begging at the place where he used to be cheered.’ ” The tea hostesses were Mesdamos Hansen and Speight. Miss Tankersley invited members to meet at her home in October. The meeting closed with the temperance doxology and the universal prayer.
