CUT IN HALF
ITALIAN SUBMARINE RAMMED BY CRUISER ATTEMPT TO ESCAPE FAILS. NO SURVIVORS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright I LONDON. September 4. The Admiralty states that an Italian submarine has been sunk by the British cruiser Hermione. There are no survivors. The submarine was sighted on the surface and attempted a crash dive. The cruiser rammed her, cutting the submarine in half and carrying part of the wreckage on her bows. U=BOATS’ TASK NOW MUCH MORE DIFFICULT. BETTER PROTECTION OF CONVOYS LONDON. September 4. Submarine Commander Kell, in a broadcast over the German radio, said: “It is undeniable that Britain has learned much throughout the war, because the pursuit of the merchantmen in convoys has become more difficult.” Commander Kell emphasised the effectiveness of the corvettes and admitted that the increased air protection and also the more numerous escorting vessels had succeeded in driving off the U-boats. He added thal the U-boat crews, with very great nerve-strain, were continuing the pursuit of convoys till an attack was possible.
