OATH OF ALLEGIANCE
POSITION OF TEACHERS SIX REFUSE TO RE-AFFIRM. AUCKLAND DISMISSALS. AUCKLAND, September 3. The fact that -■ only six out of 2400 teachers had not reaffirmed their oath of allegiance in response to the board’s request was reported at a meeting of the Auckland Education Board today. Some of the six signed a form with the addition of a conscience clause. Mr W. H. Fortune, while giving teachers credit for the honesty of their opinions, moved that the employment of conscientious objectors should be terminated. The chairman, Mr W. J. Campbell: We can’t do that. Mr Fortune: We can’t build up a potential “fifth column.” Parents all over the countryside are dissatisfied. Taking the cases individually, the board decided that two of the teachers should be peremptorily dismissed, and also that one relieving teacher should be no longer employed, and that the department should be advised to terminate the engagement of one secondyear training college student. Mr W. J. Boyer moved that the Minister be asked to give education boards power to deal immediately with conscientious objectors, and any teachers whose loyalty is in question. Mr Fortune seconded the motion, and it was carried unanimously.
