CARTERTON

GOLF LADIES' CHAMPIONSHIPS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The following is the draw for the senior and junior championship games to be played by the Carterton Ladies' Golf Club on Saturday:—Mrs Harrington and Mrs Moroney; Mrs Callender and Mrs Murray; Miss Campbell and Miss Berrill; Mrs Robertson and Miss Armstrong; Mrs Johansen and Miss Booth; Miss Smart and Miss Peters; Mrs Court and Miss I. Corlett. Other players are asked to arrange their own partners. Mrs Colson and Miss Armstrong will be in charge of the afternoon tea. The finals of the men's championships over 36 holes will be played as follows: Seniors, Dudson v Harrington; junior, Colson v Dwane. The remaining members will arrange their own partners for a medal round, this being the last round for the eclectic competition. Personal Items, Mr and Mrs J. Stringer, of Hastings, are the guests of Mr and Mrs J. Hooper, Carterton. Miss Daphne Sewell, daughter of Mr and Mrs F. Sewell, of Belvedere Street, Carterton, will leave on Monday to join the W.A.A. military corps at Levin. Mrs J. W. Barnard, of Day’s Bay, whose husband is on • active service overseas, is the guest of Mrs Stubbs, Rhodes Street, Carter ton. Private C. Bliss, son of Mr and Mrs E. T. Bliss, of Parkvale, who saw service in Greece and Crete, and who was seriously ill in Egypt, returned to Carterton yesterday. He was met at the railway station by his parents and several local citizens, including the Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, being warmly welcomed back to Carter ton. Mr Ben Roberts, M.P. for Wairarapa, visited the Clearing Hospital at Wellington today and welcomed the Wairarapa soldiers "that had returned from overseas. Social Gathering. There was a large attendance at the Bandroom, Carterton, last evening when L/C lan Percy and Ptes lan Mackie and P. Bond, who recently returned from the Islands, were welcomed home. The time was taken up by dancing to music played by Mrs V. J. Ashton’s Orchestra, extras being played by Misses M. Herrick, V. Irwin and MeSsrs Jack Barnes (Masterf ton) and Hemi. A Lucky Spot waltz was won by Corporal lan Percy and Miss Gadsby, of Masterton. During the evening Mr Jas Finn welcomed the guests and asked their acceptance of a bundle of cigarettes each. He wished them luck and good health when they returned to their military duties at the weekend. The guests then delighted the audience by singing the Fijian farewell song and in. response encores, rendered several other songs. Welcome Home. Pte C. Bliss, who saw service both in Greece and Crete, has arrived back from the Middle East, and the residents of Parkvale and district will tender him a welcome home gathering in the Parkvale Hall on Saturday evening next. Mrs Ashton’s Orchestra will provide the music for the dancing. Pte C. Bliss, along with members of the 19th - Wellington Regiment, saw some desperate hand-to-hand fighting in both Greece and Crete and was among the last soldiers to be evacuated. After landing in Egypt Pte Bliss became seriously ill and his life was despaired of for some time. He was later invalided home.
