OBITUARY
MRS CHARLOTTE ANNE MACKAY
Shortly before midnight there passed away last night one of Masterton’s old pioneers in the person of Mrs Charlotte Anne Mackay in her 95th year. Born at Uxbridge, England, Mrs Mackay came to New Zealand in the Lady Gainsboro, a sailing vessel which took five months to make the voyage. While hei husband went to seek his fortune in America, Mrs Mackay came out to relatives already in New Zealand, amongst whom was her grandmother, who was born in Oxford, England, 141 years ago, and now rests in the old Bolton Street cemetery, Wellington and' whose son served in one of the British regiments in the Maori War. On being rejoined by her husband, Mrs Mackay elected to stay in New Zealand and they came to the-Wairarapa in 1880 and commenced business ir Masterton in a general store and bakery in connection with which they conducted the Kuripuni Post Office, there being only a limited postal delivery in those days. The surviving members ol Mrs Mackay’s farmily are one son. Mi M. G. Mackay (Masterton) and five daughters, Mesdames Elliott (Masterton), McGuire and Ayson (Wellington) and the Misses J. and B. Mackay (Masterton). There are also eleven grandchildren and fifteen great-grand-children. of whom several are serving in the present war. Mrs Mackay’s husband, who pre-deceased her twenty years ago was a nephew of the Rev. Dr. Graham, of Glasgow, contemporary and friend of the eminent Scottish divine, Dr. Guthrie, of the same city.
