FEATHERSTON
FIRE IN WASHHOUSE BUILDING TOTALLY DESTROYED. (“Times-Age” Special.) Yesterday afternoon the fire brigade received a call to the residence of Mr H. Houghton, Bethune Street, where a fire had broken out in the washhouse and foolshed. The brigade was handicapped by lack of water. The nearest main, at Fitzherbert Street, was 600 yards from the fire.. The brigadesmen tackled the fire with bucket pumps and chemical extinguishers and were able to save the toolshed and prevent the fire from spreading to the house, but the washhouse was totally destroyed. The assistance of residents in carrying water from nearby houses was greatly appreciated by the brigade. DAIRY COMPANY ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of shareholders and suppliers of the Featherston Cooperative Dairy Co., Ltd., was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Featherston, on Thursday. There was a large attendance. The balance sheet and report were adopted. The suppliers expressed themselves as being well satisfied with the payout. The retiring directors, Messrs Geo. Yule, J. G. Donald, Wm. Hutchings and R. R. P. Hardy, were re-elected. Mr Thos. Benton, after 30 years of service on the board of directors, retired and Mr Roy Donald was appointed to fill the vacancy. Mr R. W. Fuge was elected chairman, and Mr Geo. Yule deputy-chair-man.
MrL. H. Smart was re-elected auditor to the company. The estimated final average pay-outs per pound of butterfat' are: Cheese suppliers, 19.0069 d; cream suppliers 16.310 d; whey cream, 14.624 d. Costs to f.o.b. cheese were 3.2458 d per, lb butterfat; creamery butter, 2.448 d; whey butter, 2.3080 d. The cheese manufactured totalled 1224 tons, an increase of 555 tons compared with the previous year. Personal Items. Mrs J. King entered the Greytown Hospital today to complete her ■4O hours training as kitchen aid. The Misses Chisholm gave a “gift afternoon” on Saturday for their niece, Miss Dorothy Chisholm, whose marriage will take place shortly. A pleasant time was spent with competitions and singing. The guest opened the parcels, and in a neat speech thanked those present for their gifts and good wishes. Miss Barbara Lomas, Ngaio, is spending a holiday with relatives in Featherston. Miss Betty Smith is visiting 'Wanganui. Aircraftman Ken Milne, Rongotai, was a week-end guest of Mr and Mrs T. Tidswell. Mr Allen Johns and Mr W. Muir, Palmerston North, were weekend visitors to Featherston. Miss Irene Hirst, Wellington, is the guest of Mrs H. R. Bloxam. Miss Hatton has returned from a weekend visit to Wellington. Golf Club. The links were in splendid condition on Saturday after the recent heavy rain when the fourth round of the Stableford competition was played. The best cards were: A. T. McNamara 14, 18, 32; H. Neilson 20, 12, 32; I. McCallum 23, 8, 31.
