The Metropolitan Opera Association is facing an acute situation, owing to Kirsten Flagstad’s failure to return from Norway and the continued illness of Marjorie Lawrence, <■ who has been mentioned as the full-time successor to Flagstad. Marjorie Lawrence is now being treated by Sister Kenny m a Minneapolis hospital. Both her legs are partially paralysed but her condition is improving slowly. The Metropolitan Opera Association has engaged Maria Markan for the forthcoming season. Sir Thomas Beecham will conduct at least ten operas.
