METHODIST CHURCH

MISSIONARY AUXILIARY. MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Methodist Women's Missionary Auxiliary was held in the Methodist Parsonage on Thursday afternoon, Mrs H. S. Kings presiding over a good attendance of members. Two items were rendered by Mrs R. Keltic after which afternoon tea was served by Mrs W. White and Mrs Gill. Mrs Kings welcomed the Rev. D. McNeur, who spoke on “Life and Conditions in China at the Present Time.” China, he said, was as large as Europe, having a population of 500,000,000. The highest profession is that of the land. The Chinese produce rice and millet, but very little stock is raised New Zealand had missed in China a ready' market for mutton and wool. Owing to the ancient superstition that the gods dwell in the earth, there were untouched vast tracts of land having rich mineral deposits, but this land gradually was being opened up. The Japanese should have conquered China sooner, but the Chinese burnt everything as they retreated, and took their plants and machinery with them. The Chinese have retreated westward, said Mr McNeur, and have established themselves in modern cities on the Burma Road and in Western China. Here the Chinese women, under the supervision of a New Zealand manufacturing expert are making cloth and blankets to be sent all over China. Miss V. Jackson thanked the speaker for his address.
