CARTERTON
EXCELLENT CONCERT SCOUTS & WOMEN’S DIVISION. (“Times-Age” Special.) An excellent concert was given last night by the Women's Division of the Farmers’ Union Social Club and. the Boy Scouts. Despite the unfavourable y weather conditions there was almost a / capacity house. The first part of the programme was contributed, by members of the Boy Scouts and items by Mr A. Kay, who is always a popular artist, and Miss Lola Hopkins, mouthorgan solo. The Scout items were arranged by Mr H. T. Ray, and great credit is due to him for the training of the boys. He was assisted by Mrs V. L. Robinson, who played the accompaniments. Those taking part in the Scout items, were enthusiastically encored. The programme was as follows: —Choruses, “We are the Boys from Way Down Under,” “Maori Battalion,” and “Sussex by the Sea,” Mr A. Kay taking the solo parts and the Scouts the chorus; cornet duet, Scouts Falconer and Fryer; sleight of hand, Mr H. T. Ray; sketch, “Butchers Shop,” Scouts; duet, “Little Drummer Boy,” “I’ll Pray for You,” A. Kay and Scout I. Martin; violin solo, Scout Forbes; song, “Clemantine,” five Scouts; tumbling, four Scouts; sketch, ‘The Burglar,” Scouts; mouth-organ solo, Miss Lola Hopkins; song, “Bless ’em all Somewhere in England,” Scouts Booth, Robinson and lan ’Martin; sketch, “Worst Aid Class,” Scouts. Scoutmaster Fairbrother presented Scout Peter Nilson with the certificate of a King Scout. The Scoutmaster said this was the first certificate of its kind won by a Carterton Scout. Members of the Social Club of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union delighted the audience with a splendid contribution in the second half of the programme. (The eight items staged were a credit to the club and showed patient and painstaking training. Mrs D. Walsh, president of the Social Club, announced the various items and all were well received and deservedly applauded. The programme comprised: Song, “Nautical Notions,” members of the club; playette, “Wanted a Cook;” duet, members of the club; playette, “0.H.M.5.;” “Old Spinning Wheel,” Mrs H. E. Ordish was recalled for her splendid mandolin solo; song, “Oh, Ma Ma;” “Victory Song” by the company. Mrs Keith Reid played the accompaniments. Mr C. E. White, chairman of the Scout Committee, thanked everyone for their attendance, Mr H. T. Ray for his part in the programme, and the ladies of the Women’s Division for so generously coming to the Scout Com- * mittee's assistance in helping to ari range such a splendid programme. • They had given their services gratuitously and the committee extended its thanks to them. He asked Mrs Walsh’s acceptance of a donation to their funds to buy wool for soldiers’ comforts. LADIES’ GOLF SECOND QUALIFYING ROUND. The following draw has been made for the second qualifying round of the championships and an L.G.U, round to be played on the Carterton links on Saturday: Seniors: Mrs Callender and Mrs Colson, Miss Campbell and Miss Berrill; Mrs Moroney and Mrs Candy, Mrs Harrington and Mrs Murray. Juniors: Mrs Orr and Miss Lamb, Miss Peters and Miss Booth, Mrs Johansen and Mrs Forbes, Miss I. Corlet and Mrs Hastie, Miss Smart and Mrs Court, Mrs Robinson and Miss Armstrong, Miss Hamer and Miss Orr, Miss V. Corlet and Mrs Knowles, Miss Lamb and Miss Lindop, Miss Bredin and Mrs Martin. Mesdames Candy and Callender will be in charge of afternoon tea. FEATHERSTON v CARTERTON. Playing on the Carterton on Tuesday the Carterton ladies’ team beat Featherston by five games to 2, one game being halved. The result was as under, Featherston players mentioned first in every instance: Mrs Gold beat Mrs Callender, Mrs Pope lost to Mrs Moroney, Miss Williams lost to Miss M. Campbell, Mrs Connell lost to Mrs Murray, Mrs Donald lost to Mrs Johansen, Miss Ruane lost to Mrs Robinson, Mrs Feast beat Mrs Forbes, Mrs Elbe halved with Miss Lamb. WAR PICTURES SCREENING LAST EVENING. There was a large attendance at the State Theatre last evening to witness the screening of pictures of war activities. The screening was witnessed with interest by members of the Home Guard, E.P.S., V.A.D.’s. Women’s Emergency, and other corps. Building Society. At a meeting of the Wairarapa Terminating Building Society held last evening two appropriations were bal- 1 loted for. Both were drawn by Messrs L. J. Fairbrother and J. A. B. Lawrence, Carterton, who, having given notice to forego, a further ballot “was proceeded with, the result being in favour of Mrs A. E. Speedy, of Ahiaruhe, £6OO, and Mrs Tweed, Heretaunga. and 11. J. McKenna, £3OO each. Parcel Evening. There should be a large attendance at the Parkvale Hall tonight on the occasion of a parcel evening to be tendered to Mrs R. R. Foreman (nee Miss P. Renall) who was recently married. During the evening the chairman of the Patriotic Committee will make a presentation to Private Foreman. Personal. Private W. A. Haste, who was on leave from Trentham last week, was presented with a wallet from (he Rechabite Lodge, of which he is a member.
