SOCIAL PROBLEMS
NEED FOR STRONG PUBLIC OPINION. APPEAL BY MINISTER. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. This Day. An appeal to social workers to help create a strong public opinion against the practice of abortion was made by the Minister of Health, Mr Nordmeyer, in an address to the annual meeting of the Wellington branch of the Plunket Society yesterday. Increasing thought must be given to this problem by social workers, he said. Legislation might be able to accomplish some improvement in the state of affairs, but not as much as public opinion. There were too many deaths from sepsis following abortion; more potential mothers died each year from this than those who died from sepsis following childbirth. Though the ‘figures were admittedly only 14 deaths last year, that .was 14 too many. The great danger to the life of the mother by interfering with the natural course of nature could not be overstressed, he said.
