IRANIAN ADMIRAL
KILLED IN PERSIAN GULF ACTION SETTLEMENT ANTICIPATED BY NEUTRALS. ONLY TOKEN RESISTANCE ON LAND. LONDON, August 27. A Simla message says that an Iranian admiral was killed while leading a counter-attack against British naval forces in the Persian Gulf. A floating dock and four- tugs were captured by the British and two sloops sunk. It is further reported from, Simla that British and Indian forces have occupied an area 50 miles north-east of Basra and another area 40 miles farther north. So far the Iranians are offering only token resistance. With an army of 150,000 well equipped with mechanised arms, it is obvious that the full 'lranian strength is not being used. Neutral capitals are buzzing with reports of a likely settlement of the dispute. BRITISH PROGRESS WIDE AREAS OCCUPIED. (Received This Day, 9.45 a.m.) LONDON, August 27. It is authoritatively stated that the British, before noon on Tuesday, had penetrated about forty miles inland from both Basra and Khanaqin. It is officially stated in Simla that the whole area' west of Mohammerah, along the Shatt-al-Arab River to Abadan, is in British hands. Russian forces have penetrated sixty.miles. British naval forces subdued Iranian gunboats in the Persian Gulf. NO AUSTRALIAN TROOPS BEING USED IN IRAN. CANBERRA, August 27. No Australian troops so far 'are being used in the British and Soviet advance in Iran, the Prime Minister, Mr Menzies, told the House of Representatives today. He admitted that the position in Iran was as outlined in recent Press reports.
